STUART DEMPSTER-UNDERGROUND OVERLAYS FROM THE CISTERN CHAPEL 1995

STUART DEMPSTER WAS A PROFESSIONAL TROMBONE PLAYER (HE PLAYED ON THE ORIGINAL "IN C" RECORDING BY TERRY RILEY) BEFORE BECOMING A PROFESSOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON-OR MAYBE WASH.STATE-WHERE HE TAUGHT A MASTER TROMBONE CLASS.EVERY YEAR HE WOULD BRING HIS GRADUATING CLASS TO AN DE-CLASSIFIED AIR FORCE BASE A FEW HOURS FROM THE CAMPUS WHICH HAD AN EMPTY 5 BILLION GALLON WATER TANK.I FORGET IF THERE WAS AN OCCASION FOR IT,BUT ONE YEAR THEY MADE A RECORDING OF THE 9 TROMBONISTS IN THAT PARTICULAR CLASS PLAYING AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS EMPTY CISTERN WHICH-BECAUSE OF ITS MASSIVE SIZE-HAD A NATURALLY OCCURRING REVERB TIME OF A MINUTE OR MORE...I FORGET HOW LONG EXACTLY.BECAUSE EVEN THE MOST INSIGNIFICANT OF SOUNDS WOULD REVERBERATE FOR 90 SECONDS,AND BECAUSE LIGHTING WAS NON-EXISTENT,DEMPSTER DEVISED A KIND OF SIGN LANGUAGE USED TO CUE EACH MUSICIAN...THERE'S ALOT MORE INFORMATION IN THE LINER NOTES OF THE CD-ALL OF IT FASCINATING-THEN WHAT I'VE PARAPHRASED HERE...EVERYBODY HAS THEIR OWN FAVORITE CHILLOUT ALBUM,AND THIS ONE HERE IS MINE.I SERIOUSLY RECOMMEND SEEKING IT OUT....

  1. Another must dl!

Are you familiar with the Joseph Childress 'Leaving the Barren Ground' 7"? Also explores water tank reverb.
